Prompted by unfavorable conditions caused by Taal Volcano’s eruption, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) postponed the second game day of its volleyball tournament on Monday.
“Due to (the) cancellation of classes by some LGUs (local government units) including Manila, NCAA volleyball games for Monday, 13 January 2020 are cancelled,” said NCAA management committee chairman Peter Cayco of season host Arellano in an announcement late Sunday.
Three-time women’s defending champion Arellano University and last season’s top seed College of Saint Benilde (CSB) were supposed to go for a second straight win following their opening day victories at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
The Lady Chiefs and the Lady Blazers were scheduled to battle the debuting teams Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua University, which were bottom dwellers last year.
Arellano sparked its four-peat campaign with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Lyceum of the Phiippines University last Friday that saw two-time Finals MVP Regine Arocha explode with 18 points all via attacks.
CSB, on the other hand, hacked out a vengeful 25-17, 14-25, 25-17, 25-20 win against Final Four tormentor and last season’s runner-up University of Perpetual Help System DALTA.
The men’s division matches pitting the Chiefs (1-0) against the Generals (0-0) and the Blazers (0-1) versus the Cardinals (0-0) as well as the juniors games featuring the Braves (1-0) against the Brigadiers (0-0) and the Greenies (0-1) versus the Red Robins (0-0) were cancelled.
According to Cayco, the resumption of the tournament today (Tuesday, Jan. 14) will depend on whether there will be suspension of classes.
Last year’s semifinalist San Beda University is scheduled to tangle with Lyceum at 12 noon while Perpetual Help seeks a bounce-back victory against Colegio de San Juan de Letran at 2 p.m. in the women’s division.
Two-time men’s titlist Perpetual is also set to target a second triumph versus Letran at 3:30 p.m. even as San Beda squares off with Lyceum at 10 a.m. The Red Cubs and the Junior Pirates start the game day with their 8 a.m. clash while the Junior Altas and the Squires cap it off at 5 p.m.
