In danger of remaining winless in group play, Australia found itself in a 2-0 hole after goals in the 27th minute from Marta (on a penalty kick) and another in the 38th minute from Cristiane. Marta now has 16 goals all-time in the Women’s World Cup over five different tournaments.

The comeback began one minute into injury time of the first half when Caitlin Foord cleaned up a ball on the back post to score. In the 58th minute, Australia got even on a long-distance strike from Chloe Logarzo that got through Brazil goalkeeper Barbara.

The game-winner came on an own goal when Brazil’s Monica pushed the ball past her own goal line in the 66th minute. Australia was initially ruled offside on the score, but a video replay overturned the call.

It was just the second time in the history of the Women’s World Cup that a team rallied from a two-goal deficit to win.

Brazil and Australia are both 1-1. The second round of Group C play concludes Friday when Italy (1-0) opposes Jamaica (0-1) in Reims, France.

China 1, South Africa 0

Li Ying scored in the 40th minute, and China held off South Africa in a Group B game in Paris.

China, which lost 1-0 to Germany in its tournament opener, improved to 1-1 in Group B. South Africa fell to 0-2, having also lost to Spain 3-1.

Germany is 2-0 in Group B and will advance in the tournament’s round of 16. China and Spain, which is also 1-1, will meet on Monday in Le Havre, France, to decide the group’s second automatic berth for the next round.
